10 good reasons to oppose another supermarket in Taplow

  1. We already have enough supermarkets in the vicinity – Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Asda, Waitrose, Tesco, M&S Simply Foods, Iceland and several independents – and not many smaller shops.
  2. More local shops will close and others will have to cut back as Tesco grabs their business. Shops selling food, drink, electrical and household products, toys, pet products, adult and children’s clothing, plants and flowers, medicines, beauty and hygiene products, newspapers, magazines, books, CDs, DVDs, sandwiches and take-away snacks and local cafés will be most at risk. That is a lot of shops, particularly in a recession.
  3. Jobs will be lost as shops close and others cut back on staff, and because of the knock on effect on their wholesalers, distributors and support businesses. Overall more local jobs may be lost than Tesco create.
  4. New businesses will be put off opening shops because Tesco will dominate the market for so many products.
  5. Burnham High Street may become a ghost town with more empty and boarded up shops.
  6. A new Tesco will completely finish off Burnham street market.
  7. Tesco will not bring cheaper food and products. Tesco are often more expensive than some of our existing shops and street market prices.
  8. As local shops close there will be less choice and Tesco profits will go to rich shareholders, rather than remain in our local community.
  9. There will be a lot more traffic, especially along the A4 – cars and Tesco juggernauts. This will clog up and already very busy main arterial into Maidenhead and lead to more road accidents.
  10. We will lose our sense of being a community and the contacts and relationships that develop through having a good range of local shops.
